It’s that time again, to catch up on the jobs around the house, that have been building all year.
The DIY backyard clean-up, minor alteration, or preparation for that new building project, are all reasons for you to be busy around the home.
Whatever the reason, before you start, do you know if your property or buildings contain asbestos and are safe?
Many homes within Tasmania contain Asbestos with some forms easy to identify, however some are not so easy.
We all know the potential hazard of Asbestos to our health when it’s in an ‘unstable’ state.
Unstable is if the Asbestos product is breaking down, dusting or being disturbed.
Airborne fibres from this unstable product can enter your system causing irreversible health problems.
Before you start demolishing or removing materials, it is wise to clearly identify what they contain BEFORE you start work.
Asbestos materials may be found in the following:
- Ceiling tiles
- Cement sheet
- Roof tiles and eaves linings
- Cement sheet walls – including brick cladding
- Moulded products such as flues, downpipes, guttering, water and sewerage pipes
- Door seals on ovens
- Electrical switchboards
- Fire blankets
- Vinyl floor tiles and sheeting
- Lagging and jointing using tape and rope
- Paint – typically industrial epoxy
- Sprayed insulation
- Tilux sheeting in place of ceramic tiles in bathrooms
- Carpet underlay
- Tile backing
- Putty

I hadn’t thought about checking the house for asbestos before starting my next project. I may be removing a wall, so I could definitely find some asbestos in there. I should get an inspection and removal before I start anything.
